When General Motors lifted its 400 CI engine limits in its intermediate cars, Buick answered that fresh challenge with the muscular GS, considered by many to be the greatest Buick ever built. Like its divisional counterparts, the Gran Sport's largest engine was increased in displacement by more than 50 CI and given standard fresh-air induction through twin functioning hood scoops, with a jump in torque and horsepower that left many of its competitors in its wake. The most conspicuous improvement was in torque, which leaped from the previous year’s maximum of 440 lb-ft at 3,200 RPM to an incredible 510 lb-ft at just 2,800 RPM; only Cadillac’s 472 and 500 CI engines delivered higher ratings, and neither one reached it at lower RPMs.

The GSX appearance package, available in brilliant Saturn Yellow and Apollo White, included front and rear spoilers, contrasting accent body striping, heavy-duty suspension with larger tires and a Matte Black hood-mounted tach. Driven just 31,701 miles, the 1970 Buick GSX presented here was the recipient of a rotisserie restoration completed in 2007 by Then and Now Auto in Marietta, Georgia. It is documented as No. 202 of the 678 produced in the Buick GSX Registry, where it is one of 19 listed with a 4-speed manual transmission and 350 HP engine of the 81 built with that combination from the factory. In addition to its drivetrain headlined by the aforementioned cold-air induction-fed 455/350 HP V-8, it incorporates power steering and brakes, a beefy Positraction rear end, dual exhaust and even the correct carburetor, distributor, alternator and starter. Finished in factory-correct QQ-code Saturn Yellow with a black interior, it boasts the full complement of GSX features including bucket seats, a center console and the GSX-exclusive Sport steering wheel.
